Alanis Morissette
Under Rug Swept

MiniReview by LouV

SOS. Music is good. But it's a carbon copy of the first two albums. Alanis ditched Glenn Ballard on this one and wrote the music and produced it herself. Apparently she felt she'd absorbed enough of his music making ability to do it on her own.

Bottom line: I'm getting tired of listening to this chick whine. Every song is the same old -- Alanis whining about how this lover couldn't understand her, how that lover had a big ego, how the waiter didn't pay her enough mind not knowing she could buy and sell the place, etc, etc. It's whine, whine, whine..

It's become clear to this reviewer -- especially after her gag-me-with-a-spoon VH1 Storytellers appearance of two years ago -- that this is an ego-driven nit wit of the first order. She's had to reinvent herself numerous times since childhood in her all-out attempts to be famous -- from Star Search to Canadian disco queen to her very lucky run-in with Ballard.

Prediction: this is the last highly publicized Morissette album. It's already spinning down the charts. She's got a great voice, but every song is the same and she ain't no songwriter. She needs to reinvent herself again, and fast.

Recommendation: If you like Alanis Morissette, buy the album. Like I said, the music's good. But I bet you it's the last Morissette album you ever buy, because you, like me, will say that this act is tired. PS: am I the only one thinking about Alanis's period every time I hear 'uh oh this could be messy'?
