May
10, 2006 -- The election of Cory Booker to the Newark
mayoralty will give that downtrodden, badly-led city a chance to
be not just
New Jersey's largest city, but its best as well. Though a Democrat, Cory
seems smart enough to realize that outgoing mayor Sharpe James'
craven machine-like policies have kept
Newark
down - a statewide and national joke. |

|
As
a Newark neighbor and nearby Jersey City resident, I urge Cory not to descend into the pandering,
self-interest, and unaccountability that were the sorry hallmarks
of the Sharpe James administration. Cory can vigorously lead Newark
away from that failed past into a brighter future for Newark - and by extension,
New Jersey .
And
Cory should be especially cautious in becoming too close to his
"friend," celebrity goddess Oprah Winfrey, an expert on
fame but hardly public policy. Oprah's ideas on economics include
giving away free cars for publicity! Newark's had enough of bait-and-switch shenanigans, it's time for a new
day.
