August,
2005 -- Matt Taibbi has written his first book, “Spanking the
Donkey”, and it’s just been released. It offers his inside
look at last year’s presidential election, as he followed the
Dean and Kerry tours as a journalist. Taibbi never fails to make
me laugh, and he’s a real good observer. He calls himself a
professional misanthrope; he leans left but shoots at the left and
right with equal vigor. If you voted for Bush or if you voted for
Kerry or if you voted for Dean, you owe it to yourself to pick up
this book. I bet you will laugh and be morbidly drawn to the
details and behind-the-scenes observations and sometimes
off-the-wall antics of Taibbi (who donned a gorilla suit while on
the Kerry trail, and spied as a republican vote counter in the
Florida primaries, but that’s besides the point and not the
essence of this book).

This
book strings together elongated versions of columns that he wrote
for the NY Press and Rolling Stone while on the tour. In essence,
his diary. So you can jump into it at any point and have a good
time – you don’t have to read it cover to cover.
If
you liked Hunter Thompson, you might like Matt Taibbi. If you like
the Red Sox, you might like Matt Taibbi. If you like the Yankees,
you might like Matt Taibbi.
Here’s
his own review of his book:

Unfortunately,
this book is apparently not available at Amazon until its official
release date of May1, but you can find it in certain Barnes and
Noble bookstores who have pre-released it by accident.
This
has been a paid political announcement. A heads’ up. Because I
know some of you people are political. And like a good laugh.
